ἡγούμενόν σε κατέστησαν μὴ ἐπαίρου γίνου ἐν αὐτοῖς ὡς εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν φρόντισον αὐτῶν καὶ οὕτω κάθισον
Have they made you ruler of a feast? Be not lifted up, Be you among them as one of them; Take thought for them, and so sit down.

καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν χρείαν σου ποιήσας ἀνάπεσε ἵνα εὐφρανθῇς δι' αὐτοὺς καὶ εὐκοσμίας χάριν λάβῃς στέφανον
And when you have done all your office, take your place, That you may be gladdened on their account, And receive a crown for your well ordering.

λάλησον πρεσβύτερε πρέπει γάρ σοι ἐν ἀκριβεῖ ἐπιστήμῃ καὶ μὴ ἐμποδίσῃς μουσικά
Speak, you that are the elder, for it becomes you, but with sound knowledge; And hinder not music.
4
ὅπου ἀκρόαμα μὴ ἐκχέῃς λαλιὰν καὶ ἀκαίρως μὴ σοφίζου
Pour not out talk where there is a performance of music, And display not your wisdom out of season.
5
σφραγὶς ἄνθρακος ἐπὶ κόσμῳ χρυσῷ σύγκριμα μουσικῶν ἐν συμποσίῳ οἴνου
As a signet of carbuncle in a setting of gold, So is a concert of music in a banquet of wine.

ἐν κατασκευάσματι χρυσῷ σφραγὶς σμαράγδου μέλος μουσικῶν ἐφ' ἡδεῖ οἴνῳ
As a signet of emerald in a work of gold, So is a strain of music with pleasant wine.
7
λάλησον νεανίσκε εἰ χρεία σου μόλις δὶς ἐὰν ἐπερωτηθῇς
Speak, young man, if there be need of you; Yet scarcely if you be twice asked.
8
κεφαλαίωσον λόγον ἐν ὀλίγοις πολλά γίνου ὡς γινώσκων καὶ ἅμα σιωπῶν
Sum up your speech, many things in few words; Be as one that knows and yet holds his tongue.
9
ἐν μέσῳ μεγιστάνων μὴ ἐξισάζου καὶ ἑτέρου λέγοντος μὴ πολλὰ ἀδολέσχει
If you be among great men, behave not as their equal; And when another is speaking, make not much babbling.
10
πρὸ βροντῆς κατασπεύδει ἀστραπή καὶ πρὸ αἰσχυντηροῦ προελεύσεται χάρις
Before thunder speedeth lightning; And before a shamefast man favor shall go forth.
11
ἐν ὥρᾳ ἐξεγείρου καὶ μὴ οὐράγει ἀπότρεχε εἰς οἶκον καὶ μὴ ῥᾳθύμει
Rise up betimes, and be not the last; Get you home quickly and loiter not:
12
ἐκεῖ παῖζε καὶ ποίει τὰ ἐνθυμήματά σου καὶ μὴ ἁμάρτῃς λόγῳ ὑπερηφάνῳ
There take your pastime, and do what is in your heart; And sin not by proud speech:
13
καὶ ἐπὶ τούτοις εὐλόγησον τὸν ποιήσαντά σε καὶ μεθύσκοντά σε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀγαθῶν αὐτοῦ
And for these things bless him that made you, And gives you to drink freely of his good things.
14
ὁ φοβούμενος κύριον ἐκδέξεται παιδείαν καὶ οἱ ὀρθρίζοντες εὑρήσουσιν εὐδοκίαν
He that fears the Lord will receive his discipline; And they that seek him early shall find favor.
15
ὁ ζητῶν νόμον ἐμπλησθήσεται αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ ὑποκρινόμενος σκανδαλισθήσεται ἐν αὐτῷ
He that seeks the law shall be filled therewith: But the hypocrite shall stumble thereat.
16
οἱ φοβούμενοι κύριον εὑρήσουσιν κρίμα καὶ δικαιώματα ὡς φῶς ἐξάψουσιν
They that fear the Lord shall find judgement, And shall kindle righteous acts as a light.
17
ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς ἐκκλινεῖ ἐλεγμὸν καὶ κατὰ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ εὑρήσει σύγκριμα
A sinful man shunneth reproof, And will find a judgement according to his will.
18
ἀνὴρ βουλῆς οὐ μὴ παρίδῃ διανόημα ἀλλότριος καὶ ὑπερήφανος οὐ καταπτήξει φόβον
A man of counsel will not neglect a thought; A strange and proud man will not crouch in fear, Even after he has done a thing by himself without counsel.

ἄνευ βουλῆς μηθὲν ποιήσῃς καὶ ἐν τῷ ποιῆσαί σε μὴ μεταμελοῦ
Do nothing without counsel; And when you have once done, repent not.
20
ἐν ὁδῷ ἀντιπτώματος μὴ πορεύου καὶ μὴ προσκόψῃς ἐν λιθώδεσιν
Go not in a way of conflict; And stumble not in stony places.
21
μὴ πιστεύσῃς ἐν ὁδῷ ἀπροσκόπῳ
Be not confident in a smooth way.
22
καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν τέκνων σου φύλαξαι
And beware of your own children.
23
ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ πίστευε τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ γὰρ τοῦτό ἐστιν τήρησις ἐντολῶν
In every work trust your own soul; For this is the keeping of the commandments.
24
ὁ πιστεύων νόμῳ προσέχει ἐντολαῖς καὶ ὁ πεποιθὼς κυρίῳ οὐκ ἐλαττωθήσεται
He that believes the law gives heed to the commandment; And he that trusts in the Lord shall suffer no loss.
